Wood ears grow from decaying or dead logs and here in Colorado they really like subalpine for, Abies lasiocarpa. They are very beginner friendly because they have no toxic look-alikes, and only one similar looking species that is also edible, the amber jellyroll, Exidia recisa. Wood ears are ✅ Tan to brown, ear-shaped, and jelly-textured. ✅ Matte or velvety top surface. ✅ Shiny, smooth, to slim
