Apr 14, 2022 · The chain was fixed to the right side of the carriage. It was looped through the wheel to act as a parking brake or brake as the gun was descending a steep hill. Unless the gun was restrained in some way it would overrun the horses from behind. The brake chain could also be looped around the wheel & padlocked to secure the gun.
