Long-time PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, lovingly known as Shu, has announced his departure from Sony after 31 years of service. Although understandable, the announcement came as a bit of a surprise and in a rather unconventional way: an interview with the PS Blog.

PlayStation legend and industry icon Shuhei Yoshida is to leave the company after almost 32 years, but he's not disappearing from gaming entirely.

Sony’s head of independent development at PlayStation and long-time game development leader for the console maker, Shuhei Yoshida, is leaving the company after over three decades. He helped produce some of the PlayStation’s earliest hits before moving onto help lead the platform’s powerhouse first-party studios across multiple console generations.

Shuhei Yoshida, one of the key veterans behind the PlayStation brand, has announced his retirement from Sony after more than three decades with the company. Yoshida announced the news in a PlayStation blog/podcast on Tuesday.

One of the creators of the first PlayStation is leaving Sony. Shuhei Yoshida worked at the Japanese company for nearly 31 years, and after leaving he wants to focus on indie games.

Since 2019, Yoshida has looked after PlayStation's push to encourage indie developers to its platform. In 2023, he was awarded the BAFTA Games Fellowship for his contributions to the industry.

The industry veteran later became president of PlayStation Studios in 2008, before stepping down to head the new indies initiative at Sony, where he worked with and supported external independent game developers. In the interview, Yoshida called his current role a “dream job”.

In January 2025, Shuhei Yoshida will be leaving Sony after spending 31 years with the company. Yoshida started out speaking with developers and publishers to convince them to make games for the original PlayStation but he would rise to being the president of PlayStation Studios during the PS3 and PS4 eras.
