The president of the International Criminal Court has lashed out at the United States and Russia for interfering with its investigations and calls threats and attacks on the court “appalling.”

The world’s only permanent global court for atrocity crimes has come under fire after issuing arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas leaders, among other controversies.

The ICC was established in 2002 to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and the crime of aggression when member states are unwilling or unable to do so themselves. Its warrant against the Israeli leaders marked the first time the court issued an order for a staunchly close Western ally.
