The sole survivor of a deadly lunch laced with toxic mushrooms said on Monday he felt only half alive after the death of his wife and he continued to grieve the loss of his two closest friends.

Erin made a turn to the northeast and was finally moving away from the United States as a weakened Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm passed as close as about 200 miles from the North Carolina coast.

The storm sent strong winds and dangerous waves across the U.S. East Coast. In North Carolina's Outer Banks, Highway 12 on Hatteras Island opened Saturday for residents, property owners, and workers.
