Bill Battle, former Tennessee football coach, Alabama athletic director, dies at 82
Bill Battle, a former football coach at Tennessee, has died. The University of Alabama, where he played football and later would serve as athletic director, made the announcement Thursday. He was 82. Battle was the coach of the Vols from 1970-76, going 59-22-2 with five bowl appearances in seven seasons.

As a sporadic Vol fan as mentioned, I had cheered hard in person for coach Battle and UT in such games as the win over Florida in 1970 when coach Dickey returned to play his former team, in the 1974 Liberty Bowl, in the 1975 Auburn win in Knoxville, and in the 1974 and ’76 games against Vanderbilt in Nashville.
