Divers are getting excited about the planned sinking of the SS United States. The once glorious luxury ocean liner is slated to become an artificial reef. Alabama Public Radio’s Cori Yonge reports.

Its last owner before Okaloosa County, the SS United States Conservancy, purchased the ship in 2011 with plans to transform it into a hotel, condominium or multi-purpose venue.

The SS United States Conservancy had wanted to keep the Big U afloat and looked for alternative berths after it was evicted from Pier 82 in Philadelphia in 2024, but the ship is too large.
