The man, 80, was driving his Mercedes sedan down Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps, a steep, 95-foot slope across from the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, when his car got stuck part way down.
The Spanish Steps are one of Rome’s best known monuments. Destroying or damaging a monument in Rome is punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of more than 2,000 euros ($2,300).
