With still weeks to go until the NFL draft, the Chicago Bears have already accomplished their offseason goal of fortifying the offensive and defensive lines. They began their overhaul by making trades for former Pro Bowler Jonah Jackson and first-team All-Pro Joe Thuney to slot into the guard positions before signing former Atlanta Falcon Drew Dalman to take over at center.

The Bears drafting either sounds counterintuitive at first. Tight end Cole Kmet has an $11.6 million salary-cap charge this season, the seventh-highest on the team. Running back D’Andre Swift’s $9.3 million charge ranks ninth. Amazingly, however, the Bears have more depth on the offensive line than at running back or tight end.

The Chicago Bears spent free agency shoring up their roster in the trenches with some big-name additions, including offensive linemen Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson and Drew Dalman, as well as defensive linemen Grady Jarrett and Dayo Odeyingbo.
