The June 19 holiday marks the day in 1865 on which federal troops came to Galveston, Texas, to free enslaved Black people in the state — almost 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, on Jan. 1, 1863.

Traders have a few other breaks coming on the summer schedule, starting with Independence Day. Stock trading will end early, at 1 p.m. ET, on Thursday, July 3, while bond trading will end at 2 p.m. Both markets will remain remain shut on July 4th, a Friday.
