Now that a majority of Kentucky’s medical cannabis licenses have been decided following a lottery earlier this week, there are still several steps ahead before the program really takes shape.

That’s because all medical marijuana sold in Kentucky will also be grown, processed and tested in the Bluegrass State. The program held its first lottery Oct. 28 for cultivators and processors, and Monday, Flynn confirmed all those selected have the paid licensing fees and will proceed with operations.

Kentucky awarded its first 36 medical cannabis dispensary licenses through a lottery held Monday at the Kentucky Lottery Corporation in Louisville. These winners, from specific regions, are out of 4,075 who applied for dispensary licenses,

Kentucky officials wanted the process of awarding medical marijuana business licenses to be open and transparent. That's why the random drawings were held at the Kentucky Lottery Center in Louisville. When the drawing ended, Savilla did not get a license.

The Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis received nearly 5,000 applications, with 4,075 specifically for dispensaries.

Most of the first 26 businesses to win Kentucky medical cannabis cultivator and processor licenses from its lottery system are tied to marijuana companies based in other states, one of which likely submitted hundreds of applications.

Four dispensaries were randomly selected in each region of the state, including Northern Kentucky. After nearly 5,000 Kentuckians applied to dispense medical marijuana, 36 of the 48 licenses were drawn in a lottery. Northern Kentucky applicants made up about 12% of all applications.
