Democrat Cleo Fields has won a Louisiana congressional race in a recently redrawn second majority-Black district. That flips a once reliably Republican seat blue.

Cleo Fields, a longtime Baton Rouge politician, won more than 50 percent of the vote in an open primary, negating the need for a runoff.

The Democratic Party was able to win the seat for the representative of Louisiana's 6th congressional district for the second time in 50 years.

Cleo Fields became the Louisiana delegation’s second Black Democratic congressman Tuesday night, returning to the House of Representatives after an absence of almost three decades.  The five other members of the delegation easily won reelection,

Current 6th district representative Garrett Graves did not run for re-election after his district was re-drawn.

State Sen. Cleo Fields is expected to win Louisiana's 6th Congressional District race. At midnight Wednesday, Fields had 51% of the vote against fellow Democrat Quinten Anderson and former Opelousas Sen. Elbert Guillory with all precincts reporting, according to the Secretary of State's website. AP has yet to call the race.
