Troopers responded to reports of the crash on Sandy Beach Road, which is also known as Route 140, around 7:55 p.m., according to Connecticut State Police. It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved or how many people were taken to the hospital, but state police said serious injuries were reported.

One of the passengers died from injuries, and the driver and another passenger were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Police had previously attempted to stop Carnein, but he fled at a high speed, said state police.As Carnein approached a Y-shaped intersection with Windham Avenue, he lost control of the motorcycle, police said.
