The first of two days of hearings this week on the plan for a new arena for the Sixers in Center City began at City Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024. Officials from Mayor Cherelle Parker's administration testified.

Normally, a new construction project would go through the Committee on Commerce and Economic Development, but for this particular set of legislation, council will sit as the committee of the whole, with all 17 members scrutinizing the proposal.

The measures were largely procedural and do little more than allow lawmakers to continue considering the project. “This project is not a ‘done deal,’ ” one member said.
