Google will rename the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska's Denali on its maps for users in the U.S. following President Trump's controversial executive order.

President Donald Trump has officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as changed the name of Denali to Mount McKinely.

Following President Trump’s order renaming the Gulf of Mexico, at least in the United States, Mexicans and Cubans expressed annoyance, defiance, confusion and even amusement.

The Trump administration has officially implemented name changes for Alaska's Mount Denali and the Gulf of Mexico, as requested by the new president.

Google will show Gulf of Mexico as "Gulf of America" and Alaska's Denali as "Mount McKinley" in the United States once the U.S. government has officially updated to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

Google Maps will change the name of "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System, Google said in an X post on Monday.

Google announced that it would be referring to the "Gulf of Mexico" as "Gulf of America" after Trump signed an executive order changing the name. The search engine behemoth says the change follows its practice of changing names of places when they have been updated by official government sources.

The Department of the Interior says they're moving quickly to implement President Donald Trump's executive order to rename Mount Denali and the Gulf of Mexico.

Google Maps said it would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System.

"As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America," the Interior Department stated in a statement last week. Google responded by noting that the change complies with its longstanding policy of aligning map labeling with updates in official government databases.

Usually, renaming a place starts locally. The people in the state or county propose a name change and gather support. The process in each state is different.
