Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday that government spending could be separated from gross domestic product reports in response to questions about whether the spending cuts pushed by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency could possibly cause an economic downturn.

Howard Lutnick said that Elon Musk is going to "cut a trillion dollars of waste, fraud, and abuse" in Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.

That echoes a recent message from Elon Musk on, X, the social-media service he owns, in which the unofficial head of the group known as the Department of Government Efficiency said a more accurate measure of GDP would exclude government spending.

Howard Lutnick's remarks came in response to concerns over whether the spending cuts advocated by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) might lead to a recession.

Government spending is traditionally included in the GDP because changes in taxes, spending, deficits and regulations by the government can impact the path of overall growth.
