In a highly anticipated NHL Pacific Division clash, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 at Rogers Place on Thursday (Jan. 23). Zach Hyman scored twice for the Oilers, who charged out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and went ahead 5-0 in the middle frame.

With the NHL trade deadline not that far away, the Canucks are the subject of much water cooler talk. Most of the chatter surrounds Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, but Brock Boeser‘s time with the Vancouver Canucks could be nearing its end.

All five of those players are still on the Canucks’ roster, which is only missing Elias Lindholm, acquired on the eve of All-Star Weekend, of the six that went to the All-Star Game. And yet, the team they’re on now is unrecognizable.

Hyman put Edmonton ahead 1-0 at 5:52 of the first period, taking a long lead pass from Draisaitl up the left boards at the blue line, cutting across at the dot while keeping Hronek on his back and scoring glove side on Demko.

Boeser, a pending unrestricted free agent, is coming off a career year with 40 goals and a solid postseason in 2024. While he remains on pace for 30 goals (he has scored 15 in 38 games this season), his consistent scoring ability has positioned him for a lucrative long-term contract.
