He replaced coach B.J. Adams, who was fired in the midst of Erie's 2022-23 season. Butler went 57-58-13-0 over one full season with the Otters and portions of two others.

The Erie Otters released their full 2025-26 regular season schedule on June 16. It begins Sept. 19 at Guelph, followed by their Sept. 20 home opener against the Kitchener Rangers.
