In German folklore, doppelgängers are considered to be a bad omen whose presence brings about misfortune. It feels all the more fitting, then, that we’re currently hooked on celebrity lookalike contests.

Held on Oct. 27, the Timothée Chalemet lookalike competition took the New York City by storm. Thousands of people showed up to the Washington Square Park archway to gawk at the numerous dark-haired, square-jawed lookalikes.

For as long as celebrities have existed, so have lookalike contests. It used to be traditional for the winner to take home a keepsake trophy, but the stakes are being raised these days – by the celebrities themselves.
