A body Hamas returned to Israel as part of President Trump's ceasefire deal is not that of any of the hostages, the Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday.

The Israeli military says one of four bodies handed over by Hamas on Tuesday is not that of any hostages held in Gaza.

Hamas hastened Tuesday to ease the pressure on a fragile ceasefire in its war with Israel by returning the bodies of more dead hostages. The move came after an Israeli military agency said it would slash aid deliveries to Gaza by half over concerns that the militant group was handing remains over slower than agreed.

The hostages were released after Hamas faced widespread criticism and accusations it violated Trump’s peace deal.

The return of Israeli hostages is a cornerstone of the Gaza peace plan, which called for Hamas to hand over all remaining hostages – 20 living and 28 dead – by Monday.

The Israeli military said Wednesday that one of the bodies handed over by Hamas the previous day as part of the ceasefire deal is not that of one of the hostages who was held in Gaza, adding to tensions over a fragile ceasefire in the two-year war.

By Tuesday evening, just eight of the 28 deceased hostages still in Gaza had been released by Hamas, adding anguish to many families who watched the country celebrate the return of the living captives as a great success.

Israeli officials said Israel had decided to restrict aid and delay plans to open the southern border crossing to Egypt because Hamas had violated the ceasefire deal by failing to turnover the bodies of hostages who had died after being captured in Hamas's invasion of Israel in October 2023.

The Israeli government is considering limits on aid to Gaza to penalize Hamas for not turning over more bodies of former hostages. But devastation in the enclave complicates the retrieval of all remains.

So far the Gaza ceasefire is holding, but calls are getting louder for Hamas to hand over more hostages' remains, and for Israel to allow in more aid.

It was one sign of progress after a number of apparent setbacks in the day since Trump touted his plan to end the Gaza war.

Across Israel, it's a day of joy and tears with families, loved ones and friends waiting anxiously as Hamas began releasing the last living hostages held captive for over two years in the Gaza Strip.
