One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck Russia's Far East early Wednesday, sending tsunami waves into Japan and Hawaii and across the Pacific. No substantial damage has been reported so far,

Tsunami advisories were issued in Hawaii, Alaska and Japan after a powerful 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia's coast.

Hawaii is being warned that "urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property." Watches have been ordered for California, Oregon, Washington and a vast swath of Alaska’s coastline.
