Jan. 11, 2017: Playing his 880th NHL game, Ovechkin becomes the 84th player in League history to reach 1,000 points, and 37th to do so with only one team, when he scores a first-period goal against the Penguins. It's also his 545th goal, passing Maurice Richard for 29th in NHL history.

Ovechkin’s record-breaking goal came in fitting fashion—on the power play, from his signature spot at the top of the left circle. He beat fellow Russian Ilya Sorokin clean, notching his first career goal against the Islanders' netminder in the process.

Alexander Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record for most goals in a career on Sunday afternoon, surpassing the Great One’s long-standing mark of 894 tallies.
