The number of tourists visiting Maine was down this past summer, according to a summer visitor tracking report from the Maine Tourism Office. The report shows 9 percent fewer visitors came to the state compared to last year.

While Maine is known for its summer tourism rush, more and more visitors are opting to visit during winter months, a new report suggests. While summer remains a peak season, the Maine Office of Tourism reports a 9.

Maine saw about 9% fewer tourists this summer compared to 2023, in part because of less available housing and fewer visitors staying with friends and family or in second homes.

Nearly half of visitors ate lobster in Maine last summer during their 2024 summer vacation, while 40% visited brew pubs or craft breweries, which was similar to 2023’s survey. And 45% enjoyed water activities, such as going to the southern Maine beaches, while 58% shopped during their visit.
