The storm made landfall as a Category 4 colossus in Florida’s Big Bend region late Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Helene has eased to a Category 1 storm, but still poses a huge threat across 12 states. NBC News' Jay Gray reports from Tallahassee, Florida, where residents dodged a direct hit.

Hurricane Helene has weakened to a Tropical Storm over Georgia with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph), the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm weakened to a tropical storm early Friday morning, and weakened again into a tropical depression Friday afternoon as it barreled through Georgia, producing "historic and catastrophic flooding" over portions of the Southeast and southern Appalachians.
