The Parole Board of Canada is being asked again to consider whether Paul Bernardo — the serial rapist and murderer behind some of the most shocking and grisly killings in modern Canadian history — should be released.

“I remain hopeful that you understand the sadistic, manipulative, and psychopathic nature of Bernardo’s behaviour and the endless threat he represents to public safety,” said Debbie Mahaffy, whose 14-year-old daughter Leslie Mahaffy was snatched off the street 33 years ago and met a horror show end. The parole board members did seem to understand.

The parole board noted that while Bernardo has made some progress during incarceration, there is still significant concern about his risk of sexual recidivism and his narcissistic personality disorder

The parole officer said Bernardo’s first choice is to be released to the Curé Labelle halfway house in St-Jérôme and that his second choice would be one in Montreal. The parole officer also said CSC does not recommend that Bernardo have permission to take part in escorted or unescorted leaves.
