More than 1.2 million Michigan residents took advantage of early in-person voting before it ended Sunday, state officials said Monday morning. When including absentee voting, nearly 3.1 million of the state's more than 7 million registered voters have already cast ballots ahead of Election Day.

With only hours left before polls open for the General Election Tuesday, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will hold a news conference in Detroit.

Michigan allows same-day registration, meaning that everyone eligible to vote is able to register and cast a ballot on Election Day. Residents interested in registering to vote on Election Day must do so in person.

Posts circulating online are saying that Michigan has more registered voters than its eligible voting population. But the state actually has fewer active registered voters than eligible voters, based on data from Michigan's State Department.
