Spring's first meteor shower is reaching its peak. The Lyrids have surprised skygazers in the past with as many as 100 meteors per hour, but it’s not predicted to be as active this time around.

It’s known for its bright and fast-moving shooting stars resulting from Halley’s comet, the most famous comet of all, which was last in the inner solar system in 1986

To best see the Lyrid meteor shower, Griffith Observatory's director suggests heading to the mountains or desert to get away from light pollution that can cloud the view. California will have some of the best viewing conditions in the country.
