Italian Matteo Berrettini upset third-seeded Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the first round of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha on Tuesday. It was the first career win in five attempts for Berrettini against the Serbian and also his first victory over a top-10 player since 2023.

With Italian tennis at an all-time high, Matteo Berrettini has decided to step up for the ocasion, and has stunned Novak Djokovic in straight shots at the Doha Open round of 32. The Serbian player has won the hard-court Qatar tournament twice,

Djokovic started the 2025 campaign in Brisbane and lost to Reilly Opelka. The Serb moved to Melbourne, chasing his 11th Australian Open crown. The veteran struggled in the opening two rounds before toppling Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka.

Novak Djokovic admits “I am still not moving the way I want to move” following his recent hamstring woes, but insisted his injury had nothing to do with his shock loss to Matteo Berrettini at the Qatar Open.

Novak Djokovic was stunned 7-6(4) 6-2 by Matteo Berrettini in the Qatar Open first round on Tuesday as the Italian enjoyed his first win over the former world number one. Berrettini played superbly to knock out the twice champion in one hour 35 minutes to secure his first victory against a top 10 opponent since January 2023.
