Alireza Doroudi's detention comes as the Trump administration has moved to revoke visas for hundreds of noncitizen students across the U.S.
It’s the first application cycle since pro-Palestinian protests swept the campus and the University found itself in the crosshairs of the Trump Administration.
University officials said they had not been informed of the federal agents’ plans and called the situation “deeply concerning.”
“ICE HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) made this arrest in accordance with the State Department’s revocation of Doroudi’s student visa. This individual posed significant national security risk concerns,” the statement read. According to The Crimson White, the DHS spokesperson did not explain what those national security risk concerns entailed.
Federal immigration agents have detained a University of Alabama doctoral student who is a citizen of Iran, according to the school and ICE records.
