The French government has been toppled in a vote of confidence, plunging the euro zone's second-largest country into deep political and economic uncertainty.

The vote means President Emmanuel Macron will have to pick a viable successor with over two years of his presidential term left.

The French government is all but certain to collapse later this week after far-right and left-wing parties submitted no-confidence motions on Monday against Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
