Vodafone down: Network explains outage that left people without internet for hours
Vodafone has explained the outage that left its home and mobile customers without internet for much of Monday. The problems were the result of “a non-malicious software issue” rather than a cyber attack,
According to the latest data from outage monitor Down Detector, there are thousands of reports that Vodafone's broadband and network aren't working right now. In fact, at its peak, there were some 130,000 complaints, making this a major outage. Along with Down Detector, there are plenty of reports flooding sites such as X (formerly Twitter ).
More than 130,000 customers have reported issues with Vodafone on Monday afternoon (October 13) complaining of having no access to the internet or mobile phone networks.
Vodafone in the UK is experiencing a massive outage of its mobile network and broadband service. Reports that customers could not access services began at 3pm, according to the Down Detector website. More than 135,000 Vodafone customers had reported disruption by 3.20pm.
According to Down Detector, a website where people can report online service issues, there have been more than 130,000 reported problems with Vodafone's services after 3pm UK time, with more than half of these referring to broadband services.
Vodafone has gone down in a huge outage. Vodafone’s official status pages also appeared to be hit by the outage – or the vast amount of people attempting to load them – and were also down during the technical problems. It offers an official “network status checker” page, for instance, but that was also offline.
Vodafone appears to be coming back online – at least for some, in some places. The number of reports on tracking website Down Detector is also falling, suggesting that fewer people are running into problems. This comment from a security expert makes clear that the outage was probably not a cyber attack – but it is big nonetheless.
Vodafone, BT, Virgin Media, CityFibre and Sky are among those that have received complaints, with issues spanning across the UK, including Manchester, London, Glasgow and Cardiff. If you've been left without an internet connection, you could be entitled to compensation, without needing to do anything about it.
