Seven Denver public schools will shutter at the end of the school year and three others will narrow the grades they serve after board members unanimously approved a controversial round of school closures Thursday evening. Their vote was met with audience members erupting into chants, yelling “shame on you.”

Nearly 100 parents, teachers and students with Denver Public Schools spoke out during a public comment session Monday night in an effort to dissuade school board leaders from moving forward with a proposal to close and or restructure 10 schools in the district.

During the board meeting, parents and students expressed concerns about children of color primarily being affected by the closures.

Denver Public Schools said any closed schools would be repurposed with input from the community — and not sold.

The DPS Board of Education voted unanimously to close seven schools and restructure three more following the recommendation by the superintendent on Thursday.

Some families and students are expressing frustration as Denver Public Schools prepares to vote on possible school closures.

They described the proposed closures as “illogical,” “unethical,” “half-baked,” “discriminatory,” and “classist.”
