La., intends to hold a joint vote on a short-term funding measure to prevent a federal shutdown and tie it to the proposed SAVE Act on Wednesday.

Wednesday night’s vote also showed that former President Trump is intent on forcing a government shutdown, as are other Republicans unwilling to work with Speaker Johnson.

House Republicans are expected to derail their own plan to avert a government shutdown, which they've tied to a Donald Trump-backed bill on noncitizen voting.

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) government funding bill was sunk through the combined efforts of Democrats and Republicans in the lower chamber on Wednesday. Fourteen members of Johnson’s own party voted alongside most Democrats against the Louisiana Republican’s spending plan,

Johnson previously scrapped a vote on the bill last week to spend the weekend rounding up support from hesitant members of his caucus. He also attached the SAVE Act to the legislation, which would prohibit states from registering non-citizens as voters—something Johnson himself has admitted is already illegal under federal law.
