The Rays on Friday acquired right-hander Forrest Whitley from the Astros for cash considerations. Whitley, a former first-round Draft pick in 2016, was designated for assignment by Houston on June 8.

Friday’s deal ends the Astros’ nine-year relationship with Whitley, whom they selected at pick No. 17 in the 2016 draft and gave a $3.148 million signing bonus. Whitley threw just 10 2/3 major-league innings with an 8.44 ERA in an Astros uniform.
