Arriving by train, I would like to get from Paignton to Pomeroy Castle without a car. I can see there are buses so far but can;t work out the stop to the castle despite many websites and maps. I'm fit enough to walk a certain distance but have to consider that I have to be back in Paignton to meet with my friend and return by train. Could you give me any advice as to the best way to do this please.

Berry Pomeroy is 2.5 miles from Totnes, if you are travelling the most direct route by car. However, the roads towards it do not all have pavements alongside them so you can either follow the beautiful but indirect John Musgrave Trail (out past Lower Bourton, Coombe Park, Gatcombe Mill, and along the Gatcombe Brook) allowing over an hour as it is possibly closer to 3.5 miles on that route. It's a beautiful route to take. Alternatively: Walk along the roads as far as the footpaths will allow (A385 towards Paignton, left turn towards Berry Pomeroy) Once in Berry Pomeroy village, be sure to turn right off the main road at the 2nd mini roundabout, walking past the old walled manor house on your right before using the footpath on your left up through a field. This is necessary to avoid walking on the dangerously narrow and blind part of the road. This still involves crossing the main road again, and following the junction sign for the castle. This road then takes you to the cottages at the top of the long driveway down to the castle. Allow at least 50 minutes. Using public transport: The 66B bus runs bewteen Totnes and Berry Pomeroy. Search for it online and you will find the timetable. The bus stop is by the school in the village. Again, you will need to walk along the footpath through the field. To get to it, walk back towards the last mini roundabout the bus passed and turn left. The footpath will be on your left. You may wish to inform the driver that you are visiting the castle, in case they can let you off after the bad section of road.
