It was a writing system used by Germanic peoples for Northwest Germanic dialects (such as Proto-Norse or Proto-Germanic) in the Migration Period between the 1st to 8th centuries (roughly).

Or some rune stones or other Viking age artifacts. I would think a good place to look for tattoo ideas is the ornamentation on runestones and on Gutnish picture stones.
